Francisca Meena
Francisca Meena is a self-taught contemporary artist, based in Copenhagen Denmark, and works in both portraits and cubism.
Her work in cubism is a storytelling of inner landscapes that mirror your true self. Drawing inspiration from geology, diagrams, architecture, etc. to form neural networks, Francisca Meena creates thought-provoking artworks that challenge the understanding of our innermost layers of emotion and perception of ourselves in response to our surroundings.
In portraits, Francisca Meena walks between portraying the banal and the more mysterious. The work depends on the story.
From the artist
When I work with abstracts and cubism, I find freedom. The patterns are made by small hints in the distemper. They come from paint strokes, I use them as guides to connect the lines and circles. Suddenly I see the network. It is all very intuitive from my unconscion.
On the other, and more consciously hand in figurative painting, I work by documenting. The base of the portraits is photography. I take photos - a lot, of everything, when I’m out and together with people that matter to me. I’m inspired by the vibe and how it feels to be in this moment with these people. Easy moments of love and more difficult moments of emotions. I’m fascinated by the simplicity and complexity.
I want to capture people dealing with life and everyday normal activities. I’m interested in that moment that shows honesty and authenticity. This documentation leads me to work with portraits in both a spiritual manner and in a more banal way. It could be portraying a scene where you stay up all night talking about everything and nothing. Or it could be a portrait in a liminal sense, this is where I tend to use myself as the figure portrayed.
At the moment, I want to explore and play around with old myths from Danish history. The work of art will be a series in mainly blue colors that portrays people as higher beings.
The medium in both cubism and portraits is mostly paper. "I feel that paper is such an intimate medium. Paper is the first thing most people will draw on if not the wall."
I truly believe that a collection of art is a mirror of yourself.
